If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.
-Rachel Carson
Today, in honor of Earth Day, we will be reading Rachel Carson, Preserving a Sense of Wonder. It is a children’s story about one of my heroes Rachel Carson, one of the greatest Environmentalists of all time. She has been said to have been the Martin Luther King for the Environment. Her book Silent Spring woke up the world to the major environmental problems that our earth was facing due to DDT and other pesticides. Her love for the environment, her study of Biology, her drive to fight for what she believed was right and her beautiful written word have made our Earth and cleaner and better place to be.
This beautiful children’s book is illustrated by the amazing Thomas Locker and tells the story of her life. It is an inspirational tale which shows that any one person can help to change the world.
Happy Earth Day.
