Midnight Run to Build A Bear

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t midnight (Build a Bear does close at 9pm) but it was late and we were the only people in the store.  But before I get to why we were at Build A Bear at 8pm on a Monday night…let me back up a bit in my story.

For over a year and a half I have been trying to potty train Lil’C.  It has been a SLOW process, one that has involved many tears, charts, prize jars, lot’s of time to “forget about it” and many other tricks along the way.  The first step was getting her to pee in the potty and then it was a battle to get her into underwear.  She accomplished both of these things about 3 1/2 years old but for the past year it has been a struggle to get her to poop in the potty.

The truth of the matter is she was afraid.  She also has a strong stubborn streak  and these two things together make for a big challenge.  Over the past year this child has been offered the WORLD to poop in that potty.  While out one day I offered to buy her ANY toy at the Country Store and she refused.  We have come close many times, have taken many weeks (months) off before trying it again but nothing worked.

Monday I got wind of the new animal they had at Build A Bear.  For months we have told her that she could go back to Build A Bear once she did the deed.  She talked about it regularly but was not very motivated.  When I pulled up the website and showed her that they had Disney Princess Pets at Build A Bear, her face lit up.  “I will poop today mommy, after my play date!”

And after dinner, she made good on her promise!

We jumped in the car at 7:45pm and headed to the mall.  We found Lil’C’s favorite pet, Pumpkin, and she went to work.

Mommy did not want this to be a one time thing, so I bought Pumpkin’s Crown as a treat for the next time she pooped on the potty.  This BRILLIANT move paid off and she has been going ever since.   We are so proud of our little girl and learned a lot about her during this process.  I know someday we will all look back on the past year and a half and smile, for now I am just grateful to no longer have to buy pull-ups!!!
